RE: [RC] was endurance topics now cause of colic? - Jim HollandI have seen NO studies that indicate that Bermuda Hay is "harder to digest" than any other hay. I have fed it all my life....and still do. Since it is the "predominant" hay here in the SE, of COURSE a lot of horses will colic on it! ANY horse that colics is most likely to be eating it in the SE! I feed exclusively Tift 44 and a "taste" of West Coast Alfafa. This "tale" has been going around forever....and I would just once like to see someone reference a study that substantiates this. IMHO...and my experience...there is no truth to this. Bermuda is a excellent hay for Endurance horses, since it's usually weed free and high in protein. Jim, Sun of Dimanche+, and Mahada Magic The vets at Auburn told her they see this particular sort of colic primarily in horses fed Bermuda hay - which is the predominant hay here in the SE. Apparently Bermuda is harder for horses to digest than other leafier/stemmier hays and can become impacted more easily in the small intestine.
