Fw: [RC] Shoe/pads - Dot WigginsFor many years I rode horses that because of their hoof type, or because of their work in very harsh conditions, I kept padded quite often. At first there was an occasional issue with junk under the pads especially in sand. I came across an old Cavalry manual that told about the fariers cutting holes in the leather pads to let junk work thru. (This was when they were campaigning hard in the SW sand country and the horses could not hold up under the miles they were doing without pads. The sand just ate up the soles.) I used a drive punch (3/8 " or so) to put three holes about half way between the point of the frog and inner rim of shoe, following the curve of the shoe. Allows cleaning and flushing if needed, but most stuff just goes thru. Thanks for the reminder, going to put pads on front for the next couple of rides. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ridecamp Guest" <guest-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, September 20, 2004 7:50 AM Subject: [RC] Shoe/pads Please Reply to: Skyla slstewart@xxxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== I happen to run across this in some old archives, and it caught my attention. I have some friends that the shoer pokes out dime size holes in the front of the pads, and apparently it works =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
