Re: [RC] shoeing/trimming philosphies - Dolores Arste

" The "Bergy" method uses a basic measurement of the
: frog to toe ratio of 2/3 to 1/3 IE: the frog should take up 2/3 of the
: measurement from bulb to toe with the toe taking up the last 1/3 of that
: measurement."

The above is not quite right and confuses "natural balance" with "bergy".
The two methods result in a similar balance but to be clear the "natural
balance" looks for 2/3 of the length of the foot to be behind a line drawn
at the widest part of the foot. This point would NOT be the tip of the frog.
Rather, it would be about a thumb's width behind that point.

"Bergy" calls for you to measure the frog from the tip of the frog to the
point where the heel begins to turn under. Then divide that measurement by
1/3. That result would be the ideal length from point of frog to the tip of
the toe.

And very importantly, both call for heels to be brought back to the widest
part of the frog. Trim counts.

Check out www.ironfreehoof.com for some concise information on the trim.
Both Bergy and Gene O (natural balance) do shoe. So, you'll be fine with the
above.

However, there are distinct differences in Jamie Jackson and Pete Ramey who
don't shoe which if done well will not allow a shoe to be nailed on as there
will be nothing to nail to. So, be sure you know what kind of trim you are
looking for. I have just learned the difference between the above methods
and am still processing.

To continue to shoe, I'd look into Gene O and/or Bergy. IMHO, you'll bea ble
to shoe and have no problems. You horse will breakover faster and better.
