Re: [RC] peeing in trailer - Karen Sullivanokay.....I can speak with some confidence on that as I have just trained 3 mares to pee on a whistle after a ride.... Begin by whistling every darn time you see the horse pee, or a friends horse pee. If you are on a long trail ride and another horse pees....walk your horse over the spot and sometimes the smell will trigger the pee (this is how I did it with the horse mare) Reward with a carrot. It helps at trail heads to have any kind of spot in tall grass and slightly uphill so they can stretch out. Stand there and whistle and sooner or later they will get the idea. The mustang just got trained. Here is how I did it. At home, after a ride, she would walk over to a poopy area and pee. I stood near her maybe 3 times total and whistled when she peed. Next time after a ride at the trail head, I walked her over to our pee spot and whistled. Took a few minutes, finally she peed....I gave her a carrot. This mare is pretty darn smart and quickly figured out the connection between whistle, pee and get a carrot! Now she does it right away. I can whistle-pee all three mares before heading home!! It does really cut down on the amount of pee overall in the trailer. I usually let her stand awhile at the trailer after riding to let her load up. If I see another horse peeing, I will whistle to her and she seems to be getting the idea, but it's hard to know for sure. I have yet to get her to pee just by my whistling. Last night, I loaded her up and she peed before we left the parking lot. I HATE that. When I camp, I frequently sleep in my trailer. I scoop out the poop, lay down a tarp or a rug (or both) and set up my cot in my trailer. But man, the thought of riding in it after she's peed is not pleasant. If you start them by consistently giving them the opportunity to pee off the trailer, there won't BE a "pee spot" in the trailer. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
