Re: [RC] Question about Kimberwick, Mylar, and Tom Thumb bits - Chris Paus

I agree with your trainer. It's not a bit issue. When
a horse spooks and bolts, it's not his mouth you have
to stop, it's his feet. You could have barbed wire for
a bit and he still could spook and bolt.

That spin, bolt thing is a confidence issue not a bit
issue. Despite how wonderful your trainer is, he
probably has a hole somewhere in his trainer, or you
have a hole somewhere in your riding and confidence.

Rather than change bits, go backwards to something you
both are very confident and familiar with and work
forward again to the thing that caused him alarm.

Remember, at four and recently backed, he's a greenie.
He's going to do greenie things. You have to act as if
it's just no big deal. You have to give him the
confidence he needs to not be afraid of stuff.

I have a 4YO I'm training, too. She's been under
saddle for a year now, but I still consider her a
greenie. She's done a lot of good things for me and
she's quite bold and brave, but now and then some
monster unnerves her. I just keep riding with the same
mild bit and work through the scary stuff. Heck, my
17YO gelding still spooks and he probably spooks more
than my greenie mare. It's a horse thing.

At this point, he has
only done the bolt thing at the beginning of his
training and has now seemed to worked through
controlling his fear. He is not a spooky horse and
has a more laid back attitude than anything. The
lady that has been training him feels I could ride
him in the Mylar without a problem, but I was
curious about the Kimberwick. Thanks for any input.
P>S> anyone in the San Diego area that wants a
fabulous trainer, she's the one. She is the most
gifted horsewoman I've ever seen and quite
reasonable (and very humble). I trailered my horse
from Colorado specifically to have her train him (I
live less than an hour from Parelli and a few hours
from Lyons). She puts them all to shame!!!
