The whole thing reminded me of that old fable about the King who went around naked and who had everybody convinced he was wearing a splendid set of new clothes. There was so much hype about the King's finery that nobody would trust their own eyes, and everybody nodded and bowed and uttered glowing compliments about the King's wonderful outfit. The country yokels who wandered into town and had the audacity to suggest that he had on no clothes at all were banned from the Kingdom...
