Re: [RC] quarter horse neck - Rae CallawayMy horses are on a sand lot and I've fed them in rubbermaid buckets on the ground for 29 years now. Hay gets thrown on the ground as well. In all this time, I've had only one incident with a sand colic - a young gelding that had to stick everything in his mouth. We do fecal floats from time to time to test, but haven't needed to change our routine because of high quantities of sand in the horses ever. They live on a sand hill therefore eat out of feeders. I try to keep straw around the feeders so that they don't get much sand when they pick. I wonder how prevalent sand colic is in areas such as Egypt? Beccy in UtahThey don't have to eat "off the ground"--they just need to eat at ground level. A feed bunk that is on the ground will work, and another common practice is to put rubber mats in their feeding area, so that they are eating at ground level, but not "off the ground" per se.
