Re: [RC] feeding colts/gelding colts - heidihi bob, nobody really addressed your question on gelding and how it might affect neck growth. i think that it really doesnt have much effect. for the most part, i think the size and shape of the neck on a horse has more to do with the breed and genetics than anything else. i have gelded colts as young as six months and on up to two year olds. i dont really think the age that they were gelded affected how "thick" their necks grew as adult horses. ed Sorry for the blank post.... Ed is right here. An intact stallion will have a thicker neck--but that will regress over time if he is gelded. So if you have a bunch of two-year-olds standing around, and some were gelded as babies and some are still intact, you will see a difference at that time. But if you then go ahead and geld the two-year-olds, the difference will be gone by the time they are all four. The end result has a lot more to do with who the horse is (genetics and management) than when he was gelded.
