[RC] gelding time - Mary Ann Spencer

Fall usually has less flies and is better but those gelded other times seem to do ok as long as they are hosed off and put out to move around.

Some show folks geld really early to have a larger gelding.  I geld as soon as two testicles can be felt.  2 yrs ago bought a very quiet 2 yo 3/4 Arab.  Gelded him right away and that was in Jun in TX.  No problems.  EXCEPT he ended up 'proud cut' and became bold and rambunctious.  Recently someone said acting studdish was from some testosterone being sent out by the pitituitary glad which may explain why some stallion calm down and some don't.

You will probably find LOTS of different reasons.  If you don't want to ever have to put up with stallion behavior, get it done ASAP.  Fly spray works great.  Put him out where he can move around alot and it is not big problem.  Have another one who was gelded at age 6 after being with a mare or two.  He is find except he ocassionally has some 'dejuvue' like when he meets strange horses or especially a stallion.   All are different.  Just don't wait until he acts studdy.  But some 'men' like to have more crest on the horses neck.  Pick a reason as all have their opinion.   Remember after age 12 months they can breed.  Most don't but some have.
