Re: [RC] quarter horse neck - heidisomebody is tying the grain bucket of his 10 months old quarter horse foal at 120 cm hight. I feed my horses from buckets from the ground, I am told that this is most close to nature and best for them. this person has been told it is better to put the bucket up high so he developes his neck muscles. the foal has to arch his neck to be able to get food out of the bucket. is this correct?. does is alos help for dressage horses to develope better neck muscles useful for going "on the bit"? Just the opposite. Horses fed up off the ground in such a manner develop the undersides of their necks, and can end up with "upside down" necks. Feeding off the ground will better develop the upper part of the neck to get both a nicer "look" AND a more functional neck for dressage or for any other sort of riding. Never mind that dental issues are less apt to develop in the horse that eats primarily at ground level, as he chews in a more normal and relaxed position and is less apt to develop hooks from having the head up at an abnormal angle.
