Now here all this time I thought Frances was the formal name for FRANK !! ;-))

According to a naming dictionary Frances is
Female
Origin: German
Meaning:  A Free Woman

Francis is unisex/male  (eg., Sir Francis Drake, St. Francis of assisi).
