Re: [RC] sweeps & auctions, buying prospects - heidiI do not consider breeding until late in the decision process. It is more important to me that the horse has a sound body and mind than names on a piece of paper. But that would never stop me from bragging if the horse has good lines :-) OK, here is one of the places where there is a lack of understanding, IMO. All horses are a product of their ancestry. "Good breeding" is breeding that produces horses with the qualities you desire with high consistency. When people talk about "names on a piece of paper" they are getting into the realm of folks who breed for the "fame" of a name (most often gotten by advertising hype, not by usefulness)--and yes, in that sense, "famous names" in the pedigree are utterly useless, unless they also happen to possess the traits you desire. You get what you pay for--if you pay for a bunch of famous names, then you get a piece of paper that you can frame and put on the wall and brag about. If you pay for "good breeding" you pay for thoughtful combination of parents who have ancestors of similar type, and of the type you want. It is "good breeding" that MAKES all those other things you were talking about--the good conformation, the sound mind, etc. Those things don't just "happen"--they come about because people did "good breeding" instead of just collecting names on paper.
