[RC] Why buy from the killers? - Tracey Smith

Why buy from the auctions?  Because sometimes you DO get a really good horse and save them from what would surely be either a trip to the killers or a very unsavory home.

I got Amira for just $200 at an auction...when I was not even actually shopping for a horse!!!  Had gone that night wiht a friend to look at used tack as I was looking for a couple things for my other horse...brought no truck or halter or anything as I was NOT looking for a horse!  I had actually been saving money as I was planning to buy during the summer and had planned on spending about $2000-4000 for the "right horse".

I'll admit, I lucked out as she was in great shape other than being only 730 pounds.  She as also not broke...had been used just for a broodmare.  So, I knew I was taking a HUGE RISK and certainly did not look at her as then animal that I would compete in CTR or endurance with.

At the time "endurance prospect" to Amira meant, she had ENDURED alot already being starved and was to have to ENDURE much more on her road to recovery.  Here in our part of Texas it is definitely NOT arab country and I just knew if I did not get her she would end up with a horrible home as there did not seem to be any other "arab lovers" there that night.

Amira and I "connected" and I just knew she had to come home with me and the rest is history.  I now want her to become a successful equine athlete because of her background...as it is the ultimate proof that miracles can and do happen.  Not all the time...but sometimes is better than never right?

Sometimes the long shot does win the race.
