RE: [RC] drug rule - heidiSo-- I guess my question is: is it legal for me to have adequan shots in between competitions?? Should it be longer than 72 hours before? I was told that used preventively for a teen aged distance horse, that it could help head off joint problems in the future-- so is it OK or not???.......Chris E./Indiana Anything you use which is either out of the system (a drug) or down to nutritional levels (a nutriceutical, which is where Adequan would fall) is legal. FWIW, Adequan won't do your horse squat given right before the ride anyway--it NEEDS to be done a few days beforehand to have the maximum effect! The substance rule is to ensure that there are no inappropriate substances in the horse ON RIDE DAY. This is not the same thing as saying that you can never use these substances in your horse, ever. The 72-hour guidleline is likely fine for nutriceuticals (Adequan, B-complex, E-Se, those sorts of things). I wouldn't trust 72 hours at all for drugs--one with a 24-hour half-life would still have roughly 12% of a therapeutic dose on board at 72 hours. (Never mind that it is the need to use an actual drug that makes it questionable whether your horse really SHOULD be there that soon after, anyway.)
