[RC] OH my Gosh!!!! - June Scheunemann & Mike Bernsdorf

Geez people.....I'm the one who used a GPS/radio on the Shore to Shore ride
in Michigan.....I can't believe how suspicious people can be nor how
competitive....gee whizzzzzzzzzzzz!!!! Number One I was not running up
front!!! Heaven forbid...my goal was to complete all 5 days with a healthy
sound horse and I did just that...plus one more 50 miler as I did the warm
up ride. I used the GPS/radio to know where my location was from the vet
checks and camps....since on this trail you are just following blue dots (no
mileage markers...nothing...just dots on trees...not to mention someone's
sense of humor to paint dots 20 ft off the trail on dozens of trees!!!) I
also used it to talk to my hubby (crew) to let me know how far from a road
crossing (or firelane crossing) so I could slow my boy down just alittle so
he could catch his breath before we got there and with catching his
breath...he could drink so much easier. Not once did I think of using it to
"better" my position or be at an advantage to other riders.....I have ridden
this ride before and know that you are out in the middle of nowhere and
sometimes knowing you have a way of contacting if something "bad" happens is
reassuring. We purchased these as a safety precaution!!!! Geez
people.....have alittle faith!!!!! I used it twice to help other riders!!!
Once to let my crew know what was going on with another horse so he could
have electrolytes ready for her at the next road crossing....the second time
was when we came upon a front runner who was now walking his crampy horse
into the vet check...I was able to radio ahead to my crew to let his crew
know he was OK!!!! (since there were very few crews out on the trail due to
having to pull trailers to the next vet check)...

OK now to those of you who think this is an unfair advantage....was it
unfair for me to even have a crew??? We got up an hour earlier than
most....Mike took the trailer to the next camp and then unhooked and came
back to crew out of our truck....Maggie's crew had a separate vehicle to
crew...was this unfair to those who didn't get up early??? or have a
separate vehicle??? Neither Maggie or I were front runners!!! Our concern
was only for our horses and having food and water out there for them....so
now that's a bad thing??

the lone GPS/radio user who had a great time at S2S (riding in the back and
talking to my crew to help my horse)
