Having lived in San Diego for 30 years, scratches is seen fairly frequently
because of the amount of sun plus the majority of horses are being fed a
predominatly alfalfa diet.  One horse that boarded with me had her blaze
sunburned so bad that there was only pink skin on the lower half of her face
(white blaze area only).  Another grey arab had scratches repeatedly.
However I will say his owner kept him extremly clean (no dirt barrier) and
when his next owner let him be a some what dirty grey arab he no longer had
repeated episodes...also reduced alfalfa by 50% as well.

My point being it probably is individual metabolic & environmental elements
compounding issues rather than just white legs.  In otherwords there is a
higher potential than black legs but there is still only a small percentage
of white legged horses that get it.

My gelding JJ has white socks to his knees (he's a chestnut), and as far

as

I can tell,pretty strong hooves as well as scratch resistant legs...even
with all the mud this summer.  He also doesn't seem to be bothered all

that

much with the bumps and scrapes one gets on the trail.  I use desitin on

his

legs and white blaze (nose) and he hasn't gotten sunburned.  I never liked
white socks on all fours on a horse before him, but now I do. :)
