RE: [RC] erin clutter-looking for TALL horse? - CharlesI can think of several reasons why someone would want a tall horse. First is personal fit. I weigh a lot and feel uncomfortable riding horses where I weigh almost as much as they do. (I've seen weight debated here before, so it's a personal issue). In my wife's case, she has very long legs and doesn't like having her legs dangling near the ground. Also she doesn't like it that only part of her leg is available to communicate with her horse. Other reasons: The view from up high is a lot better. You get to look over all the other riders. You can see further down the trail. You are easier to spot in a crowd since you stand head and shoulders above everyone else. There is nothing like the mild high you get coming down from high altitude to sea level. You have more time to regret what you did before you hit the ground. Let's face it, 16h isn't really all that tall. When I get Jon in shape (next year most likely now that I've moved to a farm) he will be among the tallest horses at the ride. They don't have to jump as high, and in some cases can walk over obstacles that other horses have to jump. The ride often is smoother. People are amazed at how smooth my Percheron is. Some folks say "Once you go Draft, you never go back." She can cover ground at a gallop and you'll think you never left the easy chair. Nobody else wants to mess with your horse. Tall horses make people nervous. You should see the looks when I tell folks that Keepers is the gentlest and safest horse to ride (she's 17h2" and BIG). Mostly though, I think it's a matter of personal choice. Some folks just feel better on a taller horse. Some folks feel better on a smaller horse. There isn't a right or wrong about this. Exactly. That's what i was wondering, Ed.. why does the horse have to be 16H? That's an awful lot of horse! Most of you know Dane Frazier.. he's pretty darn tall and I've seen him ride a horse that is in the 15H range... Tall isn't the issue as much as sturdy is! chris --- Ed Kilpatrick <whytrotfarms@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: erin, just how tall is your dad? how much does he weigh? there are lots of good (very good) horses out there that are 15.1 to 15.3! does 16 hands have to be the "magic number"? ed ===== "A good horse makes short miles," George Eliot Chris and Star BayRab Acres http://pages.prodigy.net/paus =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
