[RC] Using a Butt Rope - Technique - GarnerT

I don't pull the end of the butt rope through the halter. I think my horse
would have freaked out. I hold the halter lead rope & the end of the butt
rope in my left hand, stand at his left shoulder, line him up with the
trailer, hold the loop in my right hand, & drop it quickly over his butt.
If he circles around me, I let him. When he stops, I line him up with the
trailer opening, get a little ahead of him, & guide him in. It does take
some practice, but as soon as he's in the trailer, I can simply drop the
butt rope, pet him, & then tie him up. I don't have to worry about taking
the butt rope out of his halter. Do be careful when doing this. You want
to make sure your butt rope isn't so long that you can get tangled up in it.
Also, when I was first trying to do this, I wasn't very good. Taz was a lot
smarter & would go around & around in tiny little circles until I was dizzy!
Eventually we figured it out & he loaded better & better! For those of you
struggling with loading issues, give this a try, but keep in mind it doesn't
work for all horses. Some pull back, against the rope, & WILL NOT GO IN.
My husband's Quarter Horse will not go in using the butt rope. Luckily,
he's loading great now, but we had to work together using the Parelli method
for awhile to get him in.

One last thing, make sure you are giving your horse a quiet, careful trailer
ride. Don't slam on the brakes & speed around corners. I drive like an old
lady with my horses & I think that's one thing that has helped. Once they
get in, there's food in there & a noneventful rides really helps!
