The bulldog type that you have is easy to see. If it were sitting on top of the ball and closed you would easily see that. There are a couple of hitch types made from stamped steel that use an internal piece to clamp them. I had one on an old trailer with hydraulic surge breaks. Because the stamped steel was wide, it was harder to see unless you bent over and looked from the side. There used to be a kind (seen mostly on small utility trailers), that used a wheel (like a hard faucet handle) to tighten a screw to attach. These were notorious for jamming internally so the hitch was on, but not actually secured.
