Hi Bob. Thanks for your reply to my post. In my mind, the wording of the rules
about banned substances does create a window of opportunity for personal
interpretation of the meaning. Let me play the Devil's Advocate for a minute.
The rules state "...normal substances in abnormal amounts..." I live in an
extremely selenium deficient area and must supplement my horse daily to reach
minimum blood levels for competition. That is not normal for horses born and
raised on Vancouver Island. A rigid interpretation of the rules would suggest
that selenium supplementation at more than "normal" levels would be
illegal("normal" for us Islanders being almost non-existant). The same could be
said about the use of electrolytes or of Carb-Charge. E-lytes in far above
normal doses are absolutely essential to this game and yet that ruling might
suggest that was illegal. Carbs exist in feed and yet, carb loading
preparations are many times more concentrated than what would naturally be
present in grain and are commonly used in endurance racing. The use of the word
"drug" is also an open door for personal adjustment. A drug, according to my
dictionary, is "any substance used as a medicine". That suggests the treatment
of a pre-existing condition of some kind. Holistic/homeopathic compounds are
designed to promote overall good health and are not necessarily used to treat
disease. A very fuzzy line of interpretation can be drawn based on the way the
current rules are presented and I suggest that a clearer, written ruling is the
only way to make the issue of banned substances go away once and for all.
