We freeze brand all our horses with a brand my husband made himself and
dry ice. Believe me they don't suffer. Worst thing is the clipping -
the young ones get a bit strung out about that at times. We put them
in a V spot in the fence, I feed them crunchies or grain and Wayne
holds the brand on for 45 - 60+ seconds. They don't even notice. The
only ones we couldn't do were a couple of Icelandics a friend brought
over to do. Even clipping as close as possible wasn't enough. The
coats are so dense, they would have to be shaved and/or liquid nitrogen
to do the job.
There is a picture of Dorothy Sue Phillips going over Cougar Rock in
2001 on Abu, a horse we sold her half way through XP2001 and she
competed him most of that last half and then completed Tevis on him.
The brand shows up beautifully in the picture.

Freeze Marking (it's not a brand) takes 28 seconds and is
PAINLESS to the horse. It cost $100 and they came right
to the barn.
While freeze branding is probably not as painful as hot branding, it
ain't painless either. Just try putting some liquid nitrogen on your
own skin and you will find out just how painless it isn't.
Actually, it probably hurts more at the moment you do it; however, the
pain does not persist as much as a hot brand does; and it "heals" faster
too..
