[RC] West Nile - Stewart, CarrieI doesn't matter whether or not your horse is vaccinated either. Your horse can still get West Nile and can still die from it. In fact, the vets at Texas A&M actually told me that it is harder to diagnose on just visual symptoms when a horse has been vaccinated. This was the case with my mare. She went so quick from normal to utterly un-savable in just 12 hours and was vaccinated 6 months prior to contracting West Nile. Carrie Stewart Central Region From: "GarnerT" <GarnerT@xxxxxxx> Subject: [RC] West Nile Virus We have several people with WNV here in Bakersfield & one horse that I know of. I've had 8 horses vaccinated & haven't had one bad reaction yet. The horse that is ill is at my local vet's & he is really sick. He thinks he'll recover, but who knows. I asked my vet about the bad reactions & he said the same thing - no bad reactions from Fort Dodge, but some from the new vaccine that you can give yourself. In fact, one of my friends had a bad reaction with her new horse - what are you going to do though? The mortality rate is so high for horses with WNV - are you going to take a chance? My horses have all had their shots!
