RE: [RC] Sand ??s - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Mary mkornwolf@xxxxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== Here in Hanover County VA some folks give Metamucil (or the cheaper generic equivalent) to help prevent sand colic. There's also products made specifically for horses; the key ingredient is psyllium which pulls the sand along with it as it passes through the gut. The horse dose is more than the human dose and you simply mix it dry in their feed; my vet advised dble the human does twice daily for a week and then repeating every month or so, depending on pasture conditions. To tell if your horse is injesting a lot of sand, the vet put a sample of fresh (not dried out) manure in a ziploc bag, added enough water to float, and shook so that any sand separates out. I found all this a hassle and luckily now have my horses in a less sandy part of the county, so I no longer follow this $$ protocol. It may be easier to just adjust how you feed, such as putting out hay on stall mats or hay bags rather than on the ground and maybe getting a couple loads of stone dust to put over the sandy spots. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
