Re: [RC] Do Quarter horses make good endurance horses? - Jody Rogers-ButtramHi,
I have seen some very good Quarter Horse endurance horses. I have seen ones that were the Three Bars mix to some that if I had to guess were more the older stock horse lines. My husband (who is not an endurance rider, but a great crew!) had Quarter Horses when we met. I (being the Arab person that I am) was even tempted to try one of his horses in the sport. He had the old foundation stock, the ones that were used and not just the pretty halter horses. They were no doubt the toughest things going. I could take them out and run the stew out of them(like I would my Arabs) and they could still go. they were very tough, sure-footed, very sound, had great feet and bone and just all around nice horses. They didn't have like I said that "pretty halter head" and those little feet, and they were not very big. He had two mares that did have some T'bred in them that were 15.2, but the others that were the old stock averaged
around 14.2. They did have a good bit of muscle on them, but it never seemed to bother them. Let me note something else here, from what I understand and please Quarter Horse people correct me, but these foundation lines were related to the Mustang. And his horses, looked like it.
Also, they could trot out as fast as my Arabs, not as long strided, but as fast.
I would try it, and then decide what horse I wanted to use.
