Re: [RC] Northern CA, West Nile Virus - Renie M burnettI met Linda and her husband and the mare today at the vet clinic, Crossroads, near Redding, Ca. The vet did a rectal exam and said that the manure she managed to remove showed evidence of oil, and thought that it would be a matter of time and that the mare would pass the oily, impacted poop soon. The owners were told to take her out to the lawn by the vet clinic and let her graze a bit. Of course, she was ravenous since it has been 48 hours with no food. While I was there, I was told that the WNV has reached our area; a horse lost in Palo Cedro, just 3 miles away, and there was a pretty 2 yr. old filly in the "sick" stall at the vet clinic being treated for the WNV. This little filly was hooked up to IV, still wobbley, but the vet said she was much better than she had been, and thought that the "corner had been turned." Linda will call me tomorrow, Sunday, and let me know if her mare is fully recovered from the bout of colic she has been dealing with these last 4 days. A very scary thing. Their vet bill is over the $2000 mark now, but there were willing to do as much as possible to help their nice mare to recover from colic. I will wait until the mare is doing well, and then try to make sense of why and how this young mare came so close to losing her life. renie Burnett =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
