Re: [RC] Choosing Between Horses - Chris PausI agree with Barbara and Louise. You KNOW what you have now. You have a horse who is steady and has a base of conditioning. the prospect is just that. A prospect. As many prospects turn out to be unsuited for endurance as suited for it. What if you sell the horse you know and find out next year that the "prospect" is not what you thought...too late, the good horse is gone... As for your other horse, how do you know he'll never be a contender? Is he not fast enough? Speed isn't everything. The steady eddy who can get out there, rate himself and vet through can often beat the high powered horse who burns himself out! It takes AT LEAST two years and realistically more like three or four to bring a horse into endurance and start doing really well with it. You are going to start the process all over again if you go with the new horse. you are halfway there with your current horse. chris --- Barbara McCrary <bigcreekranch@xxxxxxxxxx> wrote: With the new horse, you are looking at about 3 years down the road. He needs that much time with long slow distance and training before you can so what your current horse could be doing next year. Which is more important to you, the new horse or being able to ride competitively during the next 2-3 years? Several weeks ago I went to my mom's house for the weekend. While there, we hooked up with somefriendsof her's to go riding. I had the pleasure ofridingone of their 4 year old horses out on his firstrealtrail ride. He did GREAT! Awesome attitude, wantedto be in the front, and just walk, walk, walk.Nottoo spooky but alert, which I like. I happened to mention at the time that I really liked him andwasgoing to kidnap him and take him home with me. Now, these people are breeders and have contactedme, letting me know they are willing to sell the horsetome for a very fair price. My dilema is I alreadyhaveone horse and can only afford ONE horse, both with money and time. So help me decide: Current Horse 6 yrs old - Non-Arab who has done 1 year of LD andnow3 50's (see CT's Sinatra AERC record) Gorgeous pinto gelding with a great personality, totalcharacter, likes to joke and play Somewhat spooky about things, has a tendancy tobuckwhen being held back Will probably never be a top ten horse but CAN dothedistance New Horse Green-broke 4 yr old - Arab, no real trailexperience(other than previous ride mentioned) Seems to be well suited to the sport with attitudeandability Breeders have been successful with Endurancehorses inthe past, good bloodlines, raised correctly Would have to start over from scratch, I was just getting going with my other guy and was looking todoa 100 next year I would appreciate any suggestions or commentsanyonemight have. It's hard to part with a very muchlovedcompanion but this new guys has POTENTIAL writtenallover him. Thanks!
