[RC] Tevis Ceremony & Tribute - Mary AbbottI just wanted to compliment the Western States Trails Foundation for the excellent Tevis Cup awards ceremony held Sunday afternoon. Besides presenting the top 10 horses and honoring the "winners," tribute was paid to Wendell Robie for establishing the Western States Trail Ride 50 years ago. There were many (but not too many!) speakers, including Auburn's mayor and a city council member. 57-year old Gordon Ainsleigh, the first person to run with the horses in 1974, spoke eloquently about how Wendell didn't just hand things out, but rather gave people "opportunities," such as allowing Gordon to run the ride. Gordon said that we were now all given the "opportunity" to ride the Tevis, with the struggle and challenge of doing so, our reward. He then led a standing ovation for Wendell, which he said Wendell never had in is lifetime. Speaking of opportunities, another thing noted was how hard WSTF has had to work to keep the trail open over the years. If it weren't for that ongoing effort, and Wendell, we wouldn't have the Tevis, to aspire to, today. Good job WSTF! (And thank you Wendell!)
