Re: [RC] Experiences with Plastic Shoes - Truman Prevatt
If the clinches aren't tight then the nails will wear the hole until it
becomes large - especially in our climate. You might be able to get
away with not tightening the clinches in some areas but in FL where
there is ever present mosture (too much 6 months of the year) and fine
sand loose clinches mean wet sand in the nail holes and in no time
shoes go flying.
I think these shoes - like a lot of things - probably work well in some
conditions and don't work at all in others. I'd sure like to fine a
plastic shoe that worked but as of yet of the ones I've tried I haven't
found one yet that doesn't do more harm than good.

I use GC shoes and so have been following this thread with interest. One
thought I have for some problems is that I no longer tighten my cliches.
When we first started putting GCs on, I would tighten the clinches when
they looked like they had risen but then the nails would break inside the
hoof after a while and the shoe would spin off. Since I have stopped
doing that, I have not had that problem again.
I think that compared to steel shoes, the clinches move around and look
like they need to be retightened, but they actually get to their "happy
spot" and then stay there. The reclinching seems to over stress and
weaken the nail. Just my $0.05.
