You are right on the mark here. Sometimes I get lazy and fail to make the distinction. And the rest of your post was also very factual and well-put. The only things that need to be rasped off are things that are actually growing in the wrong direction--certainly not every little lump, bump, or ring. You are likewise correct that in abrasive conditions, the periople often manages to remain on the hoof to the ground surface, or nearly so. The horses that I most often see lacking periople are those kept in overly wet conditions for extended periods of time. (Just crossing a creek or going up to a wet area to water doesn't usually cause it to peel off.)
