Re: [RC] speaking of hoof issues.. - heidiI think you misunderstood. I still expect him to take off flairs and a rasp good roll if barefoot, just don't rasp up the hoof wall to the coronet band. It seemed to be an exercise in cosmetics without any functional purpose. I think a trim balanced hoof, with a deep mustang roll is as pretty as my guys need to be. That said, when he does need to rasp higher to remove flairs or on the occasion that we need shoes to allow the hooves to grow out a bit he still puts the "paint" on to prevent drying. Jena, I'm with you. That protective coating is on there for a reason. I agree that the hoof needs to be rasped to a straight profile to remove flairs (both for breakage and biomechanical reasons, which others have pointed out) and that if this is extensive, it should be dressed in some fashion as your farrier does. But I've seen others rasp the entire surface as you describe, and I think it is a rather egotistical thing to assume that we can "paint" it more effectively than Mother Nature does. That thin coating that is naturally on the hoof is called the periople, and it belongs there! It often gets "worn out" toward the bottom of the hoof, where it has had the most wear, and may actually be gone in some cases where the feet are quite dry. But the healthy part of it should be left intact to protect the hoof wall from drying.
