You have a supply of willing sellers, and a supply of willing buyers. The willing buyers compete for the wares of the willing sellers. The sale price is the price at that day and time a willing seller will sell to a willing buyer, that is the true value of that item on that day and that place. The seller can always set a reserve price, and try again at a different auction.
