Re: [RC] Horse Buying - Kristene Smutsfor sale should really *start* at around $5000>> Let's assume a one-to-one exchange rate (you earn a dollar, I earn a Rand), then your figures, at 5000, would be an absolute steal around here. If you can find a remotely decent horse at that price, you darn well snap it up, even if it has only 3 legs ;-)). Our prices are currently around 10-15K for a youngish horse from a decent breeder. If you're looking at the top breeders, you can start looking at 30K for one barely under saddle - one that has probably been bred for the show ring anyway, so no guarantees there! Add to that the fact that the Arabs are buying a lot of our top endurance stock, we have no guarantees of the quality that will be available in the coming years. Their buying sprees are also another reason why so-so quality horses will be placed in the market for laughable prices - prices I certainly cannot afford, now or then! So, the decision has been to breed my own replacements. Crap shoot? Certainly, but of the 2 foals on the ground now, I can look forward to having better than decent riding horses - one will be the future breeding stallion, the other will be gelded in a year or so. My dice fell in the correct slots, this time. They certainly aren't for free or even cheap, but if all goes well, I would have some change in my pocket, compared to those other prices. At least I'll know how they were raised, fed and handled.
