For me its not the cold for me or my horse, its the footing. Last year we
had cold and snow & I rode w/some frequency over the winter. This year we
have cold frozen ground w/out snow cover & my unshod horses walk very
tenuously on the hard bumpy ground. Trails get torn up when people ride
during the thawing and its like riding over boulders in places. When I
have some snow pack my horse loves to go play on the trails barefoot or
booted, doesn't matter, but even with boots he hates walking on the frozen
slippery craters this year. We had flooding when he had 60 degree weather
and tons of rain, then the temp dropped liek a rock & now my riding arena
is better suited for hockey.......in fact my daughter & I played our
version of hockey out there last w/end: 2" top of a round fence post for a
puck, brooms, and a few logs on the ice to mark the goals.
If the footing is good my fuzzy horse & I have ridden on days its been in
single digits w/out any trouble & he seems to enjoy it.

I have heard that horses windpipes are long enough that the air is always warm by the time it gets to their lungs however, anyone else heard this? It isn't the length of the windpipe--it is the size and complexity of the sinuses. But yes, given the huge sinuses that horses have, they are less in danger from cold air than we are. (And they rarely mouth breathe, unless they are ill.) I think people tend to "wimp" on cold days long before it is too cold to bother the horses, if it is not too cold for you it probably isn't for your horse!! I agree.
