[RC] horse behavior at 1st 50 - rides2far

This horse never used to be that way, and I'm wondering why
she is changing. I've also ridden in group rides where
leaving the > pack was never a problem so why now? Is there something
about a 50
that makes > them insecure?

I truly believe they learn the game, the understand the concept of a
*race* and they want to win. When a horse wants to leave a big herd at
the vet check that's eating, because he sees a horse heading back out on
the trail and you can tell he's ticked that they're getting a head start,
it's not a matter of herd bound. I've fought this attitude for 10 years.
At the last 3 rides I intentionally missed the start to try to start
slower. The first two times I fooled him. The third time he figured it
out and was *furious* and pitched a holy fit. It's not an "I've got to
be in front" thing. It's an "I want to go down the trail looking for
another horse to pass" thing. Good luck.
