Re: [RC] Spooking and punishment - Renie M burnett
I have been avidly reading all the posts about spooking and horses jumping
on top of you, etc. there have
been some wonderful, informative posts and lots of
"solutions". Let me say this; "If your horse is afraid
of something, and jumps on top of you, it is a "respect issue". My
lead mare, in my small herd, is a sweetheart of a leader. However, she is
leadmare, and, if in the wild, the only one who knows
where water is, or good grazing is, or where predators are NOT is the lead
mare. If one of the herd crashes into her, it jeopardizes
the whole herd. They must yield control to the "lead mare" and trust her
instincts in the wild. If an insecure individual challenges her authority
and knowledge, but do not have the leadership abilities and
experience", the whole herd is in jeopardy. My very gentle, intelligent
lead mare would kick the tar out of one of "her herd" crashing into her because
they saw a "spook." She, and I, allow them the option to spook, or to have
fears; however, they must not spook and damage the lead mare, or me; they
can jump forward, backward, or any direction, but NO WAY do you damage or
endanger "LEAD MARE"!! She may be the only one in the herd who knows
where water and food is, and the herd WILL NOT SURVIVE without her!
