[RC] trailers/trucks info - Sheryl O

Hi I am new here, but have been reading the archives
on and off for several months. What a knowledgable
and interesting group of horse people!

I wanted to respond to the post on trucks and horse
trailers. I have been researching and shopping and
found a website called horse trailer world to be the
most comprehensive info out there.
http://www.horsetrailerauction.com/forum/category-view.asp

I have learned a lot by reading their product reviews
and reading the forum there. I estimate that a horse
trailer is going to weigh around 3,000#, say 1,100#
for each horse plus tack, hay, camping gear, water
etc. that you are carrying - maybe a total of
6,000-6,500#. Since horses are shifting weight and
also ride top heavy, you want even more "cushion" in
your weight numbers. Some people say you want to tow
no more then 80% of your max tow limits. In the
mountains, you lose significant power for every 1,000
feet of elevation too. To me that says you want a
vehicle that safely tows 8,000 pounds or more to give
you sufficent cushion (okay, I also ride with a
helmet, but I sure don't want to be in an accident or
breakdown pulling horses).

The new body style F150s, if you get the biggest
engine and the 3.73 ratio can pull (and more
importantly stop
) a 2 horse. Same with the 2004 nissan Titans - both
those trucks can tow around 9,000 pounds. If you are
looking at previous year models, I don't think that a
1/2 ton is sufficient based on my research especially
in hilly and mountainous terrain like we have here.
I understand that these rules do not apply to
Brenderup trailers because besides being lighter
trailers, they are simply designed to be pulled behind
smaller vehicles.
