Re: [RC] forages-and now question - Karen SullivanGAK!!! Yes, the yearly scramble to buy hay for the year.....and get it in my barn!!! Here is what I have been able to buy so far..... 77 bales 2-wire permanent pasture grass (Orchard grass?), about 60 lb bales, delivered and stacked in my barn $5 a bale (pricey this year due to steel and gas prices rising). Grown by guy who claims great pride in his hay and claims he cuts it at height of maturity, when vitamin and fiber content are highest. 20 bales same guy mix of oat, rye and alfalfa., same price. 45 bales 3 wire, heavy suckers (130 lb) bale clean red oat.....full of oat....had to pick up and stack myself, ugh $7.50 a bale which is a good price. In Calif., oat hay is NOT considered a grass hay....but Oat hay. The mice do get into it mid winter, so I feed it first. pure alfalfa is $9 a bale, they load, I stack.....3wire, more heavy suckers.....130-140 lbs.....very clean and great and probably very high protein, from Oregon.....I have 12 of those. am waiting for a local grower.....they have 3 wire alfalfa/rye grass for $8 delivered and stacked.....have to check it out tonite......since I already have nice grass hay I am not that interested in this, but may buy some for picky horse. Two of my horses; the Arab/paint and mustang will mostly be fed the grass...grass mix and oat hay.......my daugher picky, hard keeper Arab gets any and all she will eat. Okay, some folks in the past have grown what they call forage mix...which is usually mix of rye, oat and beardless wheat. I am not comfortable buying hay that is really high in grain content (would rather supplement with grain if I need to...and make sure I am covering the bases in terms of FIBER). Another friend just bought a field of oat hay that matured at under a ft. The bales are mostly fine stem, a little leaf, and loaded with oat!). Seems this would be a really hot hay!!! Okay, have been wanting feedback on the following.....my grass hay guy was complaining about another farmer who cut his grass hay while it was really green and no seed heads. He said people buy it because it is so green; horses like it, etc. But, he said it is mostly cellulose at that stage.....no vitamin content and low fiber......can some experts here comment on when and how to cut grass hay? The stuff I get from the guy who claims he knows how to farm......is usually borderline turning brown...... Also of anyone who can get Timothy at a price that doesn't break the bank. Ahhh....finally a perk to living in Iowa. I just bought 400 bales of the most luscious timothy/brome/orchard grass hay. It smelled so good that I wanted to sleep on it overnight. It was $124/ton (50 lb bales at $3.10/bale). Most hay around here is alfalfa so I'm very very happy to have a supplier of grass hay. Now I can sleep easy knowing that my boys have a whole nother year's supply of nice hay stored away. Kristi iluvdez at yahoo dot com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
