Re: [RC] Safety factor of Biothane tack/yacht rope reins - PaddiAs a manufacturer I will try and answer your questions. We have tested our equipment very throughly and here are the results. Biothane reins: The hole in the center buckle will on occasion tear out separating the reins if the snaps do not give. We use brass scissor snaps on the reins for attaching to the bit. With enough pressure they will let go. Normal holding back will not open them but 1000 pounds stepping on them will. ( I had a mare who loved to dump me and run...lol made for good testing) It is very important for riders to check the scissor snaps on the reins often and replace them. They metal fatigue over time. The hardware on your halter bridle is the weak point. Buckles will bend , snaps will break. A good quality leather bridle oiled and maintained will not break any easier then biothane. You can pull a truck with a leather halter (another story) Rope reins The rope will not break. The snaps will give. All tack has built in break points for safety. Under normal use maintained equipment will last along time. Rope halters do not have a break factor.
