RE: [RC] [Fwd: [RC] West Nile Virus Vaccine Allergic Reactions] - Laurie Durgin

I just read an article that seems to shows that about 25% may have PERMANENT Neuro damage , you may want to hock something or have a bake sale for the vaccine....
I heard a rumor you can buy it somewhere and give it yourself....

Hi Diane
Here is another recent post from ridecamp that talks about the same allergic reaction. I am with you--- wondering whether I risk the reaction or not. In the meantime, I do not allow any standing water at my place--- I turn on the faucets on the waterers that don't have automatic waterers on them every day. So far I haven't seen even one mosquito (but LOTS of flies :-) which are annoying but not dangerous. I weigh the pros and cons every day because I am not talking about vaccinating a few horses-- but rather 25 so the risk of reactions is statistically greater! and there is no way I am going to pick out "my most valuable" as someone suggested-- that to me is analogous to "Sophie's Choice!"
Bette
PS I am not looking for flames here, but helpful suggestions/info

I have been a lurker on ridecamp for a long time now (one day
after I stop having babies, I may make it to a ride..) Anyways,
I do have alot of respect for the opinions from members of this
group. I have tried many suggestions off of here for my horses
and most have been very good.

I have had a real problem with giving my horses the West Nile
Virus vaccine last Monday. 2 out of 3 horses are having severe allergic reactions. None have had a reaction to any vaccine before. They are very swollen at the injection site and have hives and are having trouble lowering their heads to eat and drink. I did raise these things up for them but they still arent very interested in food and drink. The vet did come out and give them antahistamines or some such by IV and they unswelled a few hours later. 24 hours and the swelling began again. More IV medicine, swelling down, and now they are swollen again.

I am not knowing what to do here. I live in a small town and I dont think my vet, who is basically the only one in town, knows what else to do. He said he has not seen this happen before where they just keep swelling after the IV wears off. I have had horses for years and years and this is my first experience with any allergies to anything at all with a horse of mine.

Do any of you have any advice to give me that I can discuss with my vet? I just hate to see them suffering and I am worried about permanent affects here. Their joints swell a bit too and they end up walking all stiff and its just horrible to see.

Sincerely,
Traci Boyajian

I can tell you after sleeping in a tent, then in my truck, then in the back
of a trailer, then in a gneck trailer w/no LQ, and now in the new-to-me LQ
one, you don't sleep any better the night before in nicer digs - you're
just more comfortable while you're lying there obsessing :)
