Re: [RC] Tailgating on the trail - heidithis kind of tailgating is inexcusable.... I agree. But it is also a fact of life. So the question is--how can we 1) be prepared to practice "defensive riding" and 2) report/censure riders who do this? Several of us have discussed training for "defensive riding." But while I do agree that we can't "sue their pants off," we also need to feel enabled to enforce our own rules, which ARE in place with regard to endangering other horses. Enforcement can range from reporting the incident to the RM and taking the rider aside to have a frank discussion of the matter (usually the best place to start, as most folks who do this don't even realize the potential consequences) on up to protesting the behavior of a rider and getting an official censure of some sort from AERC, if the situation is sufficiently aggravated and dangerous, and/or the rider is a chronic offender. But the first step to doing this is to DOCUMENT what happens. Get numbers, and write letters. Without that sort of "get involved" approach, this sort of thing will go unchecked. Complaining about it on ridecamp may be a good way to let off steam, but it doesn't get through to the actual offenders. "Defensive riding" might also be a good subject for future clinics...
