Re: [RC] [RC] first time rides (long) - Ridecamp Guest - Chris Paushear hear, Lisa! Yeah! I am teaching my grandson to ride and care for horses. He's 9 now. When he was 5, he showed his pony in a halter class and won 1st place. He thought after that he should always win. he learned that doesn't happen. Now he understands that doing your best and having fun and taking good care of your horse is what's important, not the prize. We're all a bit nuts in this sport, LOL.. My barrel racer friend who wins money at jackpots can't understand why i'd ride all day in rain, or heat or cold or bugs to bring home a t-shirt, water bottle or other trinket. LOL.. I do it for the miles, for the time with my horse on trail, for the challenge. yes, prizes are nice and fun, but the trail itself and the time on the horse is the best part. I've been a ride manager for CTRs. it's a heck of a lot of work. Even if you beg and scavange prizes, it still costs a lot with camp fees, vets to pay, food, your time and effort to mark trail. I did it for 7 years and decided it was time for someone else to take over. I know there are managers our there who have done it for 10 or 20 years. I am in awe of them and am thankful they put on rides for us! chris> My daughter has also ridden since she was 11 or so. Sometimes she got prizes, sometimes she didn't. Sometimes she just babysat me and a new horse, and a few times rode without me so she could cruz. She sat around camp at night with the rest of us, sometimes griping, mostly laughing and always having a good time. Even when she didn't get anything. Ride Management does everything they can to make a ride just that. A good time. A good time for some is real competition. Others want to meet and ride with friends to catch up. Others want to start a new horse or work on some things like the start of a ride or the mountains. If during all that, you win something, yeah! If not, so what. ===== "A good horse makes short miles," George Eliot Chris and Star BayRab Acres http://pages.prodigy.net/paus =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
