Re: [RC] [RC] electric fence & other methods - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Nicole z_arabs@xxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== I think the biggest mistake people make (next to not grounding the power source?) is that they make the pens too big. I've seen the opposite at one ride. Someone had made tiny electric pens for their horses. The horses clearly knew what electric fence was and respected it, but the problem was that the pens were so small the horses stood rock still in the center of the pens and seemed afraid to even move lest they accidentally brush the fence. Here in So Cal, highlines won't really work. Seems most basecamps don't have any trees. Particularly in the desert rides. :) Personally, I've been sticking to the "old fashioned" method: tie to the trailer. If done right (and my start in NATRC taught me the safe way) the horse is safe, can roll, move around, etc with the least danger of getting loose. I really like the idea of hi-ties. They're on the wishlist. :) They aren't so different from tying to the trailer safety-wise, but do allow for more movement. When my stallion is ready to go to rides, I'll probably invest in a pipe pen. What I've seen done with stallions that I really like is when the stallion is tied to the trailer, but the pen is up to keep other loose horses from harassing him. Having had loose horses pester my tied horses in the past, I can see the real danger of that happening with a stallion (who would probably be napping quietly when assaulted by the loose horse...) ~Nicole =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
