RE: [RC] New/used tractors - Jim HollandLook at the Kubota BX2200. http://www.kubota.com/f/AboutKubota/prl06.cfm I bought one of these 5 years ago and have 1,000 hours on it. I mow about 9 acres of pasture, some of it on hills. The only problems I have experienced are a bad interlock switch and a broken hydraulic line. Still using the original blades. This is a two speed HST tractor with a small diesel. No clutch, no gear shift, and power steering. Heel and toe rocker pedal. Toe to go forward, heel to reverse. Take your foot off, and it stops. Excellent for maneuvering in small places around fences and mowing pastures. Comes with two independent PTOs. The belly PTO drives a 5 foot deck with 3 blades and anti-scalp rollers. This is a "finishing mower". Getting the deck off takes about 2 minutes. Pull back and latch 3 pins, unlatch the PTO, and drag the deck out. Putting it back on takes maybe 5 minutes if you're a klutz with mechanics. The rear has a PTO and a three-point hitch. I run a tiller for my garden and a fertilizer spreader on the back. You can use a drawbar tow with a ball or hook a spreader or trailer directly to a fixed hitch hole. It has 4 wheel drive and I like the turf tires. (Other tires are available) You can also lock the rear wheels together with a foot control. Will crawl up anything. A front end loader is available, but I haven't needed one. I paid $10,000.....and would buy another one. Drive it and you're hooked! :) I looked at the New Hollands....cheaper, but IMHO, the Kubota is MUCH more tractor for your money and has better resale value. I finally convinced my wife that we can't manage 6 acres without a tractor. QUESTIONS: What is best value? What add-ons do I need? NEW VERSUS USED: My wife thinks we ought to buy new. That might be best, if interest rates are good on them. I have not done mechanical work since I was a young guy and had to. I even have the shop work on my lawn mowers, so NEWER is probably best. EQUIPMENT: So far on my list I have: Front loader, PTO, 4-wheel drive (it is wet here in the winter) , brush hog (or other mower attachment), manure spreader? What about horse power? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, -Paul =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
