Diesel engines develop their torque at lower RPM and take longer to increase the RPM. If you couple this with a turbo charger, that itself takes some time to wind up and start producing boost after you punch it, their acceleration, unloaded, is relatively sedate, but hook up a 12000 lb. trailer and go over a mountain pass and you will feel the difference.
