He wasn't really going anywhere but those legs sure were working fast. Our good endurance horses trot better than he did. Please, don't give me a show ring trot because I want to go forward, not up and down. Boy howdy, you hit the nail on the head there, Bonnie! Going down the trail, it isn't about how breathtaking the trot is--it is about how smoothly it flows forward, so that it gains ground without impacting either you or the horse unduly. If it "takes my breath away" I don't want to be in the saddle! (Yeah, the old Albert Harris thing again--about how the Arab's trot is supposed to be long and low to the ground, and smooth, so that it doesn't fatigue the rider...)
