Re: [RC] water trough - Ed & Wendy Hauser"...I can't sympathise with you there: letting everyone drink out of troughs or other standing water is a dandy way to spread strangles and other nasties. Collapsible buckets are cheap, or you could have begged another crew to carry a bucket for you. ..." This seems to be somewhat of a regional thing. Most Midwest ride managers do not allow drinking from water troughs, on the trail or elsewhere. In the west it is well accepted practice. I personally was involved in a respiratory virus outbreak on a wagon train apparently spread by water troughs. I also remember a thread on ride camp where a mini epidemic was started by shared water on a western ride. Taking the clock out of the equation makes it another sport altogether. The challenge is how to keep the sport what it is while honing our skills (both as riders and as those in control roles) in detecting where "the edge" is for each horse so that we don't cross it. ~ Heidi Smith ridecamp.net information: http://www.endurance.net/ridecamp/ ============================================================
