Re: [RC] spider web face - Barbara McCraryUniversity of California-Santa Cruz has adopted the banana slug as its mascot. Here in Santa Cruz County banana slugs are entirely bright yellow (and very slimy). One can see UCSC T-shirts just about anywhere for sale, bearing a caricature of a slug and the motto Fiat Slug. This was taken from the UC system motto Fiat Lux, meaning "let there be light", so Fiat Slug would mean "let there be slug." It's really rather cute. It's possible that UCSC adopted the slug as a mascot because nothing could be farther from aggressive, and Santa Cruz, being absolutely politically correct at all times, wouldn't think of displaying anything suggestive of aggression, racial minority, or any other troublesome issues. And besides, our forests are full of them. I'm originally from Oregon, and I remember them from the Coast Range. We used to see them when we'd go camping. They're kinda greenish-yellowish, and some have black markings on them, at least in Oregon.
