Re: [RC] attack of the killer horse flies - Barbara McCraryDon't forget July! Here on the central coast of CA, they abound in July. Since many horses passing over or near their in-ground nest really stirs them up, the drag rider on our sister-in-law's NATRC ride (always held in late July) really bears the brunt of the attack. The last time I did drag riding, I listened for the screams of the riders ahead of me, dismounted, waited several minutes for the riders to get out of my range and for the Yellowjackets to quiet down a little, and then I ran (leading my horse) like crazy down the trail. I managed to get through the nest area before the yellowjackets figured it out. Whew!! My brother-in-law destroyed over a dozen nests before the ride, and my little group of riders, doing an introductory 9-mile ride, encountered 5 nests that hadn't been discovered before. I once was thrown over my horse's head, landing on my back, breaking two ribs.....all because my horse took offense at being stung on the underside of his belly.
