Re: [RC] old timers horse fly rememedy, used motor oil and what to do with it. - Ed & Wendy Hauser"... were painted with old motor oil [I think] a while ..." Used motor oil has been used for many things around the farm/world since the invention of the automobile. It is not a good idea. Used (as opposed to new) motor oil has lots of compounds that are the result of the combustion of whatever the motor runs on. Diesel engines produce more of these compounds in the soot they create than gasoline engines. In the days of leaded gasoline the used motor oil also contained lead. These compounds, some of which give the used oil its characteristic smell (bad), are typically active chemically. This is a normal result of the free radical fire in the engine. Very reactive chemical compounds tend to be poisons, and to cause cancer. As a result some of them are toxic to fish, insects, bacteria, molds, people, horses etc. The EPA wants, legitimately in my opinion, all used oil to be collected and recycled in the proper manner. They do not want it on country roads to keep the dust down, in normal sanitary landfills, in lakes, streams, fences or anywhere else. I am not saying that new motor oil is good. New motor oil contains a lot of stuff in addition to petroleum, some of which is not good for the environment. Note: that pure saturated petroleum oil is not harmful. Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline) is a high molecular weight oil. Pure Mineral Oil is sold as a mild laxative for humans and horses. Remember the Devil is in the details. Everything is a "chemical", some are good, some are bad (in the wrong place) and some are neutral. I am saying that used motor oil is really bad news. Keep it in your car, or dispose at a recycling center. Many stores that sell it for DIY changers, are set up to take the used stuff back. Some government units also collect for recycle.
