Re: [RC] Belmont-Smarty Jones - patriciaActually, he had little choice. Purge was the threating "speed horse" who challenged Smarty early on. (You notice Purge and the other early challenger weren't anywhere near the finish line in the end because they used themselves up.) Unfortunately the early speed challengers forced Elliot to use Smarty early too thus letting Birdstone take him at the end. This tactic has been known to be used as a "strategy" among the horse racing community to intentionally burn out the favorite giving a horse with better odds the chance to make an unexpected showing. Birdstone paid $74 for a $2 bet. Smarty went off at 1 to 5. It was really too bad...I think Smarty has the heart of a triple crown winner Patricia From: <Cowgirgoof@xxxxxxx> Date: Sat, 05 Jun 2004 19:06:13 -0400 To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [RC] Belmont-Smarty Jones Stewart Elliot (Smarty's jockey) should have ridden Samrty like a 100 miler- I knew at the half-way point he was going to blow him out. In each race he won before, he's ridden him at a nice easy second until the top of the stretch. This time he let Smarty pull out front and I knew then he had it blown. He assumed he had more horse than he really did. Should have paced him...Let that be a lesson to our endurance horses.
